What's included

In the app

Lecture transcription

Ripsa transcribes lectures both in real time, while teaching is in progress, and afterwards. Students can follow the live transcription as the lecture is being held, and work through the material afterwards.

Automatic summaries

In addition to full transcripts, Ripsa creates summaries of individual lectures and of entire courses, giving students an overview of key content and making revision easier.

Questions and answers about the content

Students can ask questions about the content of a lecture and get relevant answers based on the transcribed material. The feature makes it possible to quickly find and understand specific sections.

Add images and presentations

Notes can be complemented with images and PowerPoint presentations, so that text, images and presentation material are gathered in one place.

Administration

Admin portal

The institution administers the service through a clean, easy-to-use admin portal. This is where users, permissions and settings are managed.

Background

What is digital note-taking support?

Note-taking support is one of the most common study aids in higher education. It is aimed at students who for various reasons find it hard to take notes and listen at the same time, for example due to dyslexia, ADHD, hearing impairment or chronic illness. Traditionally the support has meant a fellow student sharing their notes, a solution that is fragile: quality varies, notes can arrive late and there is not always a fellow student willing to step up.

Digital note-taking support answers the same need with technology instead of another person's notes. Ripsa records the lecture and turns it into a complete, searchable transcript, in real time if the student wants to follow along during class and always afterwards. Every lecture also gets a summary with the key points and key concepts, and the student can ask questions about the content and get answers grounded in what was actually said.

For the student this means the support is always in place, holds a consistent quality and is available shortly after the lecture ends, without recruiting a fellow student. For the institution it means a form of support that is easy to offer, easy to administer and equal for everyone granted it. Students use Ripsa on their phone, tablet or computer, and all material is organised per course.

Ripsa is built in Sweden for Swedish higher education. All data stays within the EU and processing meets the requirements of the GDPR, which makes the solution straightforward for the institution's data protection officer and procurement team to assess.

Frequently asked questions

How is Ripsa different from recording the lecture yourself?

An audio recording has to be listened to in full to be useful. Ripsa turns the recording into searchable text, summarises every lecture, highlights key concepts and lets the student ask questions about the content. The student can also mark important moments during the lecture and jump straight back to them.

Which students benefit from digital note-taking support?

The support is often granted to students with for example dyslexia, ADHD, hearing impairment or chronic illness, but the need to listen without simultaneously taking notes is broad. The institution decides which students get access to the service.

Where is student data stored and processed?

Recordings and database are in Finland, encrypted backups are kept in Germany, summaries and the course assistant are processed in France, and the AI models run exclusively in Europe. No data leaves the EU, processing of personal data meets the requirements of the GDPR, and we never keep more data, or for longer, than necessary.

How does an institution roll out Ripsa?

The institution administers the service through an admin portal where users, permissions and licences are managed. Students sign in with their email address and do not need to create an account themselves. Contact us and we will show you how it works in practice.
